And who knows? Maybe he was.Įddie’s final scene in the movie, you see him out on the front lawn, saluting the dazzling sight of an emblazoned Santa and his reindeer. Eddie’s heart is so much bigger than his brain (“I appreciate that, Clark”) that he believed, at that moment, that Santa was on his way across the Atlantic. Yeah, I know he gave Clark his Christmas list so he could buy presents for his kids, but when Clark said “Hey Kids… I heard on the news an airline pilot spotted Santa’s Sleigh on his way in from New York.” Eddie was stunned, and asked, ‘Are you serious, Clark?” (another one of my favorite quotes). I believe it’s because he loves his wife so much, he wanted her to know that her favorite person loved her meal. Some of you may believe it’s because Eddie eats squirrels (until he found out they were high in cholesterol) and he’d like anything. He finished his first helping of the driest turkey of all time, and asked for more.

Cousin Eddie teaches a masterclass on how to respond. We’ve received a present or eaten a meal that is God awful.

I can’t believe I didn’t notice this the 535 times I’ve watched this movie before, but the truth of the matter is:Ĭlark is NOT the hero of Christmas Vacation.Ĭousin Eddie is the hero of Christmas Vacation. We want a world in which we can make everyone around us happy. Of course, there’s the bad stuff too: Our thoughts often wander. We both love our family above everything else. I identify with him in so many ways: We both like singing in the car with our families even if they hate it.

My new thought this year: NO YOU DIDN’T, CLARK! EDDIE DID IT!Ĭlark is my favorite character in any holiday movie, full stop. Clark is staring into the sky with a huge grin on his face, and whispers to himself…. This year’s new thought didn’t come until the very last second of the movie. The audio mixing, the quick timing beat, and Eddie just plowing on with his story is sheer perfection. Last year, I declared that the sneaky funniest moment of the whole movie was Eddie walking through the living room while talking to Clark, tinkering with the little wooden model and watching it crumble. We re-watch this movie several times in the holiday season and we always notice something new. When watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation for the 536th time this year, I came away with a new thought: The character everyone loves to ridicule, is actually the best example of Christmas spirit.
